When someone dies

When someone dies that you love, it is overwhelming and never easy. Whilst it is a situation we will all face at some point in our lives, making arrangements for a funeral can be an emotional and stressful experience, which is why the Levertons team are here to fully support you throughout your journey. We are here to help try and to try and take some of the stress away and offer guidance wherever we can.

Below, you will find practical information and next steps for every situation, with links to more detail when you need it. If, at any point, you are still unsure about the actions you need to take, you can call us 24 hours a day on 020 7387 6075.

Dying at home
Firstly, the death needs to be verified by the person’s doctor. Call the GP so that they can issue the Medical Certificate of Cause of Death, then call us.
Dying In Hospital or Hospice
Hospital bereavement staff will guide you with what to do initially- and we’ll take it from there.
Registering the death
Once a doctor has issued a Medical Certificate of Death (MCDD) the death can be registered at the Register Office nearest to the place of death. Most offices now require an appointment, so it’s wise to phone ahead.
When a child or baby dies
We work closely with local hospitals to provide dignified funerals for babies and children. Talk to us about coffins, service options and charities that offer extra support—everything is tailored to your family’s wishes.
Dying Abroad and Repatriation
Working with overseas funeral directors, repatriation specialists and airlines the British Consulate, we help manage every logistical detail of repatriation to the UK for you. We will then liaise with the coroner’s office to obtain authorisation for the funeral to take place.
Sudden or Unexpected Death
The Coroner becomes involved if the death is unexpected, violent or sudden. If a doctor can’t be certain of the cause of death, the Coroner must investigate. Contact us as early as you can.

I used them recently following the death of my mother, and 4 years earlier for the death of my father. Both times they were very helpful and made it as 'good' an experience as they could in a very difficult and sad time. The helped and advised on all aspects of the funeral and provided options to keep the costs down. I did compare prices with elsewhere and found them competitive. They recommended a celebrant, who was excellent and the funeral director Michael was at the funeral on the day. I was too upset to talk to him much, but was glad he was there all the same.

The service and help I received from Drew at Leverton was amazing, I had lost my mother and really did not where to start to honour her. They arranged everything through gentle questions and kept me updated at all times. Lesly, bless her, dressed my mom and styled her so beautifully for my last visit, I cannot thank you enough for that. I would wholeheartedly recommend their services, I was treated with compassion and my mom was treated with all the dignity she deserved.

Really lovely funeral directors. From the first phone call to the the end every memeber of staff were kind, respectul, caring and helpful. They made a very difficult situation bearable.

Leverton's handled the funeral with care and compassion and with a professionalism over and above my expectations. My only (small) criticism would be that communication post funeral was unclear (as in the arrangements for the collection of ashes). I was not aware that the ashes would be available for collection the following day and therefore was waiting on a call (either from Levertons or from the crematorium admin office). A week post funeral, I called Leverton's to be informed they were ready for collection (and had been from the next day).

We are very appreciative of Leverton's (James's) guidance and arrangements for my late Aunt's Service. Family and friends commented on how the Service would have been exactly what my Aunt wished for.

Levertons were extremely professional and helpful throughout the process of organising my father’s funeral. Their guidance and attention throughout was greatly appreciated. I have no hesitation in recommending them.
