While no funeral is truly carbon-zero just yet, there are meaningful ways to reduce environmental impact whilst still beautifully honouring a life. We're proud to offer greener, more sustainable alternatives, each selected with integrity and care.
What 'greener' really means
We deliberately use the word 'greener' rather than 'green' - because every choice is part of an evolving effort for a lower carbon footprint. A lower - impact funeral can involve:
- Using an all-electric eco-hearse, pioneered by Leverton & Sons Ltd in the UK in 2013 and now upgraded to a full-size Nissan Leaf hearse with zero emissions and recycled carbon fibre body panels. Find out more about our eco-hearse and see images of it here.
- Choosing an eco-coffin - such as bamboo, willow, or recycled cardboard - crafted in the UK where possible, made of biodegradable, and often Forest Stewardship Council-certified materials.
- Opting for a natural burial in woodland or meadow grounds, avoiding the use of formaldehyde and artificial materials, and supporting wildlife habitats.
- Simplifying travel and logistics to limit emissions or using livestreaming to include distant guests virtually.
While every option contributes something, we know that one eco-conscious or more sustainable choice may offset another - and that's why we guide you through the full picture, so that you can make informed, honest decisions.
Why chooser a greener, more sustainable funeral?
Selecting a greener, more sustainable funeral service offers:
- A more environmentally sensitive farewell.
- Reduced use of non-renewable resources.
- Meaningful options that still reflect dignity and warmth.
- Choices that are available without compromising on care or service quality.
Our greener choices here at Leverton & Sons Ltd have won us industry recognition - including the Gold Award from the Greener Globe Funeral Standard which makes us extremely proud. We are continuously reviewing and improving our practices to ensure that we keep to our commitment and ethos.
