Modernising the process: Understanding the forthcoming changes to the death registration system

When you lose someone you love, the practical steps that follow can often feel overwhelming. At Levertons, our family has been guiding people through these moments for eight generations, and we believe that clear, gentle guidance is one of the most important forms of support we can offer.

Next week, on Monday 9th November 2026, registration services across England and Wales will be changing to a completely electronic system. This is a significant update designed to modernise how life events are recorded. Because these changes will alter how families interact with their local registry office, we want to help you to understand exactly what to expect.

Moving away from paper registers

For over a century, registering a death has involved a familiar ritual: sitting with a registrar as they carefully write details into a large, paper register book before you sign your name.

From 9th November, paper registers are being entirely phased out in favour of a digital database. This means that during an appointment, you will no longer provide a physical signature. Instead, you will verify the details on a screen or a printed draft and make a formal digital declaration to confirm that the information is correct.

New options on the horizon

Following the initial digital rollout in November, the Government plans to introduce even more flexibility. From December 2026, families will have the option to register a death over the telephone or through new online portals.

While these remote options will undoubtedly provide convenience and comfort for those who prefer not to travel during a period of acute grief, traditional face-to-face appointments will still remain fully available at your local register office.

A reminder on registration timelines

These digital changes build upon the statutory Medical Examiner system that was introduced in September 2024. As a reminder, a death must legally be registered within 5 days. However, under the current rules, this 5-day countdown only begins after the Medical Examiner or Coroner has officially reviewed and approved the medical cause of death and released the necessary paperwork to the registrar, rather than 5 days from the death itself.

We are here to help

While the administrative process is changing, our commitment to caring for your family remains exactly the same. We work closely with our local registrars every day and will continue to guide you through every step of the paperwork, ensuring you feel supported from the very first call.
