1834 saw
a move to the other side of Euston Road, to Hertford Street
(later Whitfield Street) where John was followed into the
business by his third son Henry (1805-1874) and the latter’s only son Henry Edward (1832-1887). The fourth
generation was represented by Henry John (1859-1935), the
eldest son, who transferred to Eversholt Street a few months
before his father’s death. His son Stanley (1883-1963)
became a partner in 1909 and was later joined by his three
sons Derrick, Ivor and Basil. The seventh generation is represented
by Ivor’s sons, Keith (now retired) and Clive, who now runs the company
from its Eversholt Street premises, with his daughter Phillipa and nephew Andrew.

Traditions,
however long-established, are only the foundation on which
to build a service, and the twentieth century saw
considerable change in the profession. With regard to transport,
as the horse-less carriage replaced its equine predecessor,
one of the first funerals with our Rolls-Royce hearse was
that of Sir Henry Royce himself. We were also entrusted with
the first overseas funeral by air in 1932 and there is now
no major country in the world to which we have not arranged
funerals.
Still
an independent, family-owned business, Levertons is a founding
member of the Society of Allied Independent Funeral Directors
(SAIF). This national network of independent companies allows
us to assist bereaved families in the event of a death occurring
anywhere in the UK. We also provide the option of advance
planning for funeral arrangements through the Golden Charter
pre-plan scheme.
As
we continue into our third century, with branches at Hampstead,
Golders Green, Hendon, Muswell Hill, Gospel Oak
and Kentish Town, we proudly remain a completely family concern.
